Never before have we been fed with so much entertainment as we do today. This is largely due to the development of the smartphone that took off when Apple launched its first iPhone. Since then, we have seen many significant and technical developments that have had a major impact on how we behave in our everyday lives. Most of us use our smartphones several hours a day, but what are really the biggest uses?

Today, we depend on constant connection to make our daily lives work, and digital tools are used frequently in order to be able to do money transactions, emailing and other important tasks. But in addition to the practical and necessary use of the internet, we also spend a lot of time on entertainment when using our smartphones.

Social media and online casino popularity

Different types of online entertainment such as gambling has also become an emerging trend in recent years. On sites like shartino.com, hundreds of different online casino and gambling sites are compared to make it easier for players to choose from the large selection. However, laws and regulations regarding gambling vary in different countries and therefore it is important to be aware of what applies in each country before starting to gamble.

Nevertheless, the absolute biggest use of our smartphones is without a doubt social media. In a US survey, it shows that the two most worldwide spread platforms Facebook and Instagram continue to be the most popular ones by people in general. However, among younger people, apps like TikTok and Snapchat are the big favorites. The survey also shows that almost half of the participants spend between five to six hours a day on their smartphones.

How did it all start?

In 2007 Apple launched its first iPhone and it became the starting shot for the smartphone’s widespread use among the public. Prior to that, other manufacturers such as Nokia actually did have phones in their supply on which it was possible to use the internet, however, the internet connection was far too weak and also, the screen was far too small.

In 2008, Apple launched App Store and suddenly you could download over 500 different apps to your iPhone. At the same time, Apples’ biggest competitor Google released a new operating system called Android, which was open to any smartphone maker to use. Android grew rapidly in popularity and today 80 percent of the smartphone segment consists of Android phones.

As the internet connection and speed have improved, more types of uses have also been added to the smartphones. Nowadays most people surf on the 5g network and poor connection is no longer a problem for the average person. The fast connection has made it possible to watch movies and series directly in our smartphones and popular streaming services such as Netflix and HBO are used by billions of people worldwide.

The technological development seems to have no limits and how much time we will spend on our smartphones in the future remains to be seen.
