Suppose in DHCP server running network (assigning ip addresses automatically), you connect a Laptop in the same n/w, now how the DHCP is going to assign an IP add to it and how it will come to know that there’s one new machine added ?

  • We define range of ip in DHCP. DHCP does not need to know about that new computer, if that new computer is in the network, DHCP will automatically provide an ip address to it.

What is DHCP ?

  • DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is a network management protocol used to dynamically assign an IP address to any new node entering the network.
  • It provides quick, automatic, and central management for the distribution of IP addresses within a network.
  • DHCP is also used to configure the proper subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS server information on the device.
